Apply for a National Police Check

Important information

  • Also known as a criminal history check.
  • To apply online you’ll need an email address and be able to upload proof of identity documents. Check document and upload requirements below.
  • You’ll need to add the purpose of the check when applying. Licensing and regulation checks have a defined purpose. Check with your employer or licensing authority if you're unsure.
  • Volunteers pay a reduced fee if they attach a completed volunteer declaration form.

Before you apply

Read the identity and document requirements to apply for the National Police Check online:

You’ll need 2 or more documents totalling at least 100 points. You must include at least one category A photo ID.

All documents must be current and valid.

If your documents are in different names because your name has been legally changed, you'll also need to provide one linkage document as evidence of your legal name change. This can include an Australian marriage certificate or a reissued Australian birth certificate.

Common category A documents (sub-heading):

  • Passport (Australian or foreign) (70 points)
  • Australian driver licence (40 points)
  • Australian issued firearms licence (40 points)
  • Evidence or proof of age card (40 points)
  • Working with children clearance (40 points)
  • Community ID card or Aboriginal Land Council document with photo, name and date of birth (40 points).

Common category B documents (sub-heading):

  • Australian citizenship certificate (70 points)
  • Birth certificate (70 points)
  • Centrelink cards (25 points)
  • Government employee ID (40 points)
  • Statutory declaration including a photo identifying the applicant (40 points)
  • Medicare card (25 points)
  • Property rates, utilities notice or lease agreement with current residential address (25 points)
  • Bank statement with current residential address (25 points).

You need to upload copies of your ID documents when you submit your application.

Documents need to be in the following formats:

  • .GIF
  • .JPG
  • .JPEG
  • .PDF
  • .PNF
  • .TIF

Documents should be no larger than 4 Mb in file size.

You can't use this service if you need a criminal history record check for:

  • Australian citizenship
  • residency
  • spouse visa
  • guardianship reasons.
