Apply for a temporary licence to drive an unregistered vehicle

Important information

A temporary vehicle licence can only be used to drive or tow a vehicle that needs to be relocated, or repaired for registration.
You can apply online if the vehicle is a light vehicle that has had NT registration in the past. This includes cars, motorcycles and trailers less than 4.5 tonnes.
You‘ll need a current NT driver licence and the vehicle’s plate, VIN or chassis number. Learner, suspended or disqualified drivers can’t apply.
There is no waiting period for a temporary licence if you apply online and meet the requirements. It will be issued straight after payment.

This takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

All steps must be completed in one go. You can't save your application and complete it at a later stage.

There is a fee. Pay when you apply online using a Mastercard or Visa credit or debit card.
