Apply for a temporary licence to drive an unregistered vehicle

This is a new service. Help us improve by providing your feedback.

Important information

  • A temporary vehicle licence can only be used to drive or tow a vehicle that needs to be relocated, or repaired for registration.
  • You can apply online if the vehicle is a light vehicle that has had NT registration in the past. This includes cars, motorcycles and trailers less than 4.5 tonnes.
  • You‘ll need a current NT driver licence and the vehicle’s plate, VIN or chassis number. Learner, suspended or disqualified drivers can’t apply.
  • There is no waiting period for a temporary licence if you apply online and meet the requirements. It will be issued straight after payment.
